LOCATION
Largs is a large town on the Firthof Clyde in North Ayrshire and is about 33 miles (53 km) from Glasgow.
It is a popular seaside resortwith a pier. The original name means "the slopes" (An LeargaidhGhallda) in Scottish Gaelic. The town markets itself on its historic links withthe vikings and an annual festival is held each year in early September. In1263 it was the site of the Battle of Largs between the Norwegian and theScottish armies. The National Mod has also been held here in the past.
Largs evolved into a busy andpopular seaside resort in the nineteenth century. Large hotels appeared and thepier was constructed in 1834. It was not until 1895, however, that the railwaymade the connection to Largs, sealing the town's popularity.
It also became a fashionable placeto live, and several impressive mansions were built, the most significant ofwhich included 'Netherhall', the residence of William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, thephysicist and engineer.
Much of Largs is still gearedtowards tourism. There is the award winning Vikingar Centre at Barrfields, aninteractive look into the history of Viking life; Kelburn Country Centre,Barrfields Pavilion Theatre, Largs Swimming Pool, Douglas Park and InverclydeNational Sports Training Centre. But it is best known for 'Nardinis', thefamous ice cream parlour, cafe and restaurant, that dominates the Esplanade andwhich reopened in late 2008 following clearance from Historic Scotland andmajor renovation works.
A Caledonian MacBrayne ferryservice runs from Largs to Great Cumbrae, and the paddle steamer Waverley alsocalls in at the pier during cruises.
The town is served by the railwayline from Glasgow to North Ayrshire (the Ayrshire Coast Line) and also lies onthe main A78 road. It remains a popular destination for holiday-makers andweekenders from Glasgow all year round. The trains run hourly and Change atKilwinning for trains to or from Troon, Prestwick, Ayr and Stranraer.
Largs has three primary schoolsand Largs Academy serves the town of Largs and the surrounding areas, thevillages of Fairlie, Skelmorlie and the island of Cumbrae.
Largs has a variety of shops inits bustling centre and amenities for the family, including sports and leisurefacilities and a wide array of local restaurants and pubs.
